As far as we can ascertain not much has been written on the history of interpretation. Frederic W. Farrar's work "History of Interpretation" seems to be the only one which covers the subject. Farrar's work now suffers from the fact that Latin is not so nearly as widely known as it once was, so that his long Latin quotations make his work far too abstruse for the ordinary reader. He also quotes extensively in Greek, German, French, and Hebrew so that even for the college student of today his work is too technical. He does set forth a survey of exegesis from the time of Ezra to the turn of the twentieth century.
So we have set out to provide a readable and concise history of interpretation. This study has the average reader in mind and should also be suitable for the college student. We believe that this book will not only provide valuable information, but also show the enormous importance of approaching the Scriptures with the right exegetical tools in order to avoid the mistakes of the past. 176p.g.
