Thomas Kelly was born in 1769 into a very influential family who lived near Dublin. Like his father, he was intended for a career in law and came to London to study. Whilst there he was deeply convinced of sin and brought into great concern about death and eternity. He tried self-reform - asceticism, fasting, so that he even endangered his life. But he found no peace with God till led to rest on Christ alone. From this time he forsook his legal training and was ordained as a clergy-man in the Church of Ireland. But opposition to the doctrines of God's free grace which he had been brought to love, both from his archbishop and his own family, eventually caused him to become an independent minister. Having ample means he built several chapels in the Dublin area and was mainted as a faithful minister of the Gospel for 63 years.
